Today in MATH we:
  • Got our mini quizzes back - do corrections & hand them back in.
  • Reviewed EQUIVALENT FRACTIONS & GCF - do you understand them?
  • Used our fraction sets to help us understand equivalent fractions.
Today in SCIENCE we:
  • Shared our paragraphs about abandoned/old/historic buildings.
  • Handed our paragraphs in.
  • Read sia7 page 339.
  • Do sia7 page 342 vocabulary (Question #1).

  • Around the World...how did you do? It was a review of v&v pages 59-63
  • Read v&v pages 67-72
  • Develop a set of quiz questions with an answer key for v&v pages67-72, 3 questions per page - 18 questions total
  • Got our spelling words for the week

Today in MATH we:

  • Handed in our worksheets
  • went over improper & mixed fractions
  • Problem of the week #6 - we will go over it tomorrow!
  • Homework: mp7 page 49 #1-26

Today in SCIENCE we:

  • talked about the 7 wonders (Ancient, Modern, Natural, Forgotten) of the world - great work!
  • To think about: Why are the Wonders Intersting to our studies of Structures & Forces?
  • Hey.....your paragraphs "Fix it up or Tear it Down?" Bring them TUESDAY
  • Homework: Start your UNIT REVIEW

Reminders:

  • We are near the end of our Fractions unit and there are still several unfinished fraction sets. This is a shame as they could really help you study. You have had countless reminders. Take responsibility for your learning. Be the independent learner.

Today in HUMANITIES we:
  • Did a poetry mini-lesson - where does poetry hide?
  • Had Writer's Workshop time
  • Review the notes we took today in class - do you understand them?
Today in MATH we:
  • Did some drills - how are you doing with them?
  • Had a mini-quiz: if you had trouble with this quiz you need to be in our classroom Monday at lunch.....that means BRING your LUNCH & your MATH.
  • HOMEWORK: finish your fractions worksheets (classifying, reducing, & equivalent fractions - both sides), problem of the week #6. Due: Monday October 30, 2006
Today in SCIENCE we:
  • Read sia7 page 338 as a class & reviewed some vocabulary....do you understand the meaning of the paragraphs? What new words did you learn?
  • Fix it up or Tear it Down? What would you do with an old building? Brainstorm. Choose an old building and write two paragraphs; 1) describe the building, 2) explain why you want to fix it up or tear it down. Due: Monday October 30, 2006
REMINDERS:
  • What are the 7 wonders of the world?
  • Review!!!
  • Who was Salvador Dali?
  • Only ONE person reminded us about the corrugated cardboard! We will look at it on Monday.

  • Started a new fractions worksheet

Today in SCIENCE we:

  • Went over our news article questions on the bridge that collapsed in Laval, Quebec
  • Talked about how bodies and joints relate to structures and forces

Today in SCIENCE we:

  • handed in our c&r sia pg 318 #1, 2 & vocabulary - force, friction
  • read an article about the Montreal bridge collapse & answered questions about it
  • homework: finish bridge questions & vocabulary!!!

Today in HUMANITIES we:

  • Discussed the importance of trade
  • Found examples of IMPORTS and EXPORTS in Alberta
  • Completed some questions around the benefits of trade
  • This all ties in to our study of British colonization in Pre-Confederation Canada
  • Homework: Read pp. 52-53 and complete Think it Through Q# 1a, 1b

Today in MATH we:

  • Reviewed the math questions from yesterday on page 38 (Fractions)
  • We had a chance to play with the fraction sets to better understand what fractions are all about
  • Homework: MP7 page 39 #1-4

Today in SCIENCE we:

  • Reviewed bridges, in particular the CANTILEVER bridge
  • Went over the Check and Reflect Questions - Force, Friction, Moveable and Fixed joints
  • Homework: Define Force and Friction IN YOUR OWN WORDS, and answer questions in SIA page 318 #1 and #2. BE PREPARED TO HAND THIS IN!

Today we took a READING COMPREHENSION test. Based on the results, we discussed strategies for improving our reading skills, and learning how to READ FOR UNDERSTANDING. Some suggestions include:

  • Read for at least 20 minutes every night (This should be something other than school work)
  • Read a variety of text, including magazines, newspapers, novels, poems, brochures, cartoons, graphic novels and much more
  • Keep a dictionary and a thesaurus with you at all times and make an effort to look up new words

  • had an OPEN day for CE and WWW - NOBODY did them!!!! you're running out of opportunites to make up missed presentations!

  • started chapter 3 - The British in North America - question, t-chart (cause & effect)

  • talked about building bridges, how durable they are & how long they last
  • reviewed what we know about structures and forces
  • READ sia7 pages 313-318 (omit pages 316 & 317)
